The Saudi Center for Commercial Arbitration (SCCA) concluded its participation in the 71st Session of the UNCITRAL Working Group II (Dispute Settlement), held at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York on 3-7 February 2020 (9-13 Jumada al-Akhirah 1441).
Participation in UNCITRAL meetings is one of the vital SCCA activities in representing the Kingdom in international forums and events concerned with development of alternative dispute resolutions - as SCCA is the national strategic platform of the institutional arbitration industry in the Kingdom.
SCCA was represented at the 71st Session by Dr. Hamed bin Hassan Merah, CEO of the SCCA. The Session included five-days of comprehensive meetings and ten workshops, during which the Working Group discussed issues related to expedited arbitration, upon the mandate of Working Group (Dispute Settlement) by UNCITRAL Commission in its 51st session. At the conclusion of 71st Session, CEO of the SCCA said: “The Working Group on Dispute Settlement continued the preparation of provisions on expedited arbitration.
The Working Group also communicated responses received from arbitration institutions around the world about their role in this regard, and an overview of selected provisions related to expedited arbitration prepared by the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA).” The Working Group approved , at the conclusion of its Session, a report to be submitted to the UNCITRAL Commission in its 53rd Session, to be held in New York next July, to generate an approved form of provisions on expedited arbitration. These provisions will form an important appendix to the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules, and as a stand-alone set of rules on expedited arbitration,” Dr. Merah added.
