In its first time participating in Paris Arbitration Week (PAW), the Saudi Center for Commercial Arbitration (SCCA) organized a seminar titled “The New Vision for Saudi Arbitration”, hosted by AFFAKI Law Firm, for international arbitrators, lawyers, and legal counsels attending PAW events this year.
PAW is a global annual event aimed at the arbitration community and major international arbitration centers from all over the world, with the purpose of knowledge exchange and expertise enrichment around the latest developments in the industry. More than 10,000 international arbitration practitioners will participate in more than 110 events this week.
SCCA symposium touched on the most important legislative developments in the Saudi arbitration industry, which are accompanied by development projects as part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. It also covered the latest developments at SCCA, in particular the 2023 SCCA Rules, which SCCA drafted in accordance with the latest international standards and practices in the arbitration industry.
During the symposium, SCCA CEO Dr. Hamed Bin Hassan Merah said that SCCA continues to update its organizational structure and adapt to the best international applications and practices in the industry. The latest developments include the completion of the draft 2023 SCCA Rules and the launch of the SCCA Court.
Dr. Merah added: “So far, these efforts have strengthened SCCA’s vertical and horizontal presence in the industry, which is reflected in the increasing number of cases registered, the diversification of its offerings, and its geographical expansion. SCCA has been opening additional offices and is now operational in four cities, most recently Dubai.”
SCCA Chief of ADR and General Counsel Mr. Christian P. Alberti said the new rules establish institutional governance in the SCCA’s work, ensure consistent compliance with the best international standards and practices in this regard, and enhance the efficiency, flexibility, and transparency of arbitration case management, thus helping make SCCA more attractive to business sectors and firms and facilitating parties’ access to justice through the commercial dispute resolution solutions SCCA provides.
This symposium is representative of SCCA’s international outreach efforts to introduce the world to the Saudi arbitration industry and its achievements, and to familiarize the international arbitration community with the country’s efforts to transform its judicial environment into a safe commercial arbitration venue. These efforts are part of SCCA’s role as the country’s official representative in the field of arbitration locally and internationally.
