SCCA marks international launch of the 3rd SCCA Arabic Moot

Published Date: 12/09/2021

Registration is open for the third edition of the Saudi Center for Commercial Arbitration Arabic Moot, the first Arabic international arbitration competition for students. The SCCA Arabic Moot is open to undergraduate students in the faculties of Sharia and law at universities around the world. The competition is organized by the SCCA in partnership with the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and the Commercial Law Development Program at the U.S. Department of Commerce (CLDP).

This year’s competition is being launched on an international scale to bring all the competing teams together on one platform. Each team will take a turn playing both the claimant and the respondent by submitting written briefs and presenting oral arguments in a hypothetical arbitration case, all in Arabic. Thus, the competition reinforces the practical dimension of the academic instruction that students receive in their university studies.

The SCCA Arabic Moot reflects the role of the Saudi Center for Commercial Arbitration in promoting a culture of Arabic-language commercial arbitration within the legal community – locally, regionally and internationally. Through the competition, the SCCA gives Sharia and law students a solid foundation in institutional arbitration practices consistent with the international standards and best practices.

The third edition of the competition is expected to go through several time-bound stages, including publication of the case on 24 Safar 1443H (1 October 2021CE), the Claimant memorandum submission deadline on 19 Jumada I 1443H (23 December 2021CE), the Respondent memorandum submission deadline on 16 Rajab 1443H (17 February 2022CE), and the start of oral arguments on 13 Shawwal 1443H (13 May 2022).

The competing teams have the chance to win several awards, including Best Team, Best Claimant Memorandum, Best Respondent Memorandum, Best Oralist (Claimant), and Best Oralist (Respondent). Students will also have the chance to win scholarships offered by the competition to study for a master’s in law at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom, or to receive training through the SCCA-CIArb International Fellowship Program in Commercial Arbitration.
